Setting Up Mic and Headphones — Room 9, Cheetham Hill/Ancoats
Using the Focusrite Scarlett 18i20
First, connect the USB cable from the Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 interface directly into your laptop, avoiding USB hubs. Make sure your laptop recognises the Scarlett and set it as your Input/Output device in your Audio settings.
🎧 Headphones setup
1. In the big live room, plug the headphones into port 17, labelled "HP OUT".
This multi-port runs through the wall and into the control room, as part of a "snake" of cables.
2. In the control room, find cable 17 on the snake of cables behind the desk and plug it into the first headphone port of the top Focusrite Scarlett interface.
Use the volume knob on top to control its volume.
🎤 Mic setup
1. In the live room, the XLR cable from the mic needs to be plugged into port 14 on the patch bay box.
2. In the control room, find cable 14 on the snake of cables coming through the wall behind the desk, and plug it into Input 1 on the Focusrite Scarlett interface.
3. Finally, set up a mic track on your DAW, choosing Input 1 as the source — you're good to go.
🗣️ Talking to the booth from the control room
The only way to do this is to bring your own dynamic mic (any cheap mic will do) and an XLR cable — we don't provide extras.
You'll need to set up a talkback mic from the control room into the booth.
- Plug your talkback mic and cable into the interface (e.g. Channel 2 at the front).
- Create a new track on your DAW and choose the same channel as the input source.
- Send the track's output to the headphones output your friend in the booth is listening to — i.e. the first headphones port of the interface, as in the guide above.
- Every time you enable monitoring and recording on this mic track, your friend will hear your voice through their headphones.
⚠️ Feedback warning
If you can't set it up to output to their headphones (step 3 above), it'll still work, but you'll also hear it through the speakers. In this case, be careful to turn the speaker volume down — it will feedback easily, and things will get loud.
