PIRATE CAPTURE app β full guide
Recording your DJ session with CAPTURE
CAPTURE is a free iOS app that lets DJs record their sessions in select Pirate DJ studios. It replaces the older Capture.Audio browser tool and supports both video + high-quality audio, or audio-only recordings. It's only compatible with iPhones running iOS 17 or later β Android users can't currently use the app.
π Booking a room with CAPTURE
Here's how to tell a CAPTURE-enabled room from a CAPTURE-disabled one. Disabled means either there's no CAPTURE device in that studio, or there's a fault with the one that's there.
π§ Core features
With the CAPTURE app, users can:
- Record video with high-quality synced audio
- Record audio-only DJ sets
- View and manage bookings in CAPTURE-enabled studios
- Save, play back, delete, or share recordings directly from the app
π οΈ Tech setup
- iOS only β the app must be downloaded via the App Store
- Log in with your existing Pirate account
Permissions required:
- Camera β for video recording
- Location β to detect Pirate WiFi connection
- Photo Library β to save recordings (Pirate doesn't access your photos)
- Notifications β optional, used to remind you to download recordings
π Studio connection + WiFi
- You must be connected to Pirate WiFi.
- The app auto-connects when you're in studio. If not, tap "Connect to Studio #", or refresh bookings by swiping down on the Bookings tab.
- No bookings showing? A link to book via the website appears instead.
ποΈ Recording modes
There are two options:
Video mode
- MP4, 1080p, 30fps, 48kHz or 44.1kHz, 16-bit
- Auto-syncs audio to iPhone video
- App must stay open and phone unlocked
- Works in landscape if you rotate your phone
Audio-only mode
- MP3, 320kbps CBR, 48kHz or 44.1kHz, 16-bit
- Phone can be locked during recording
ποΈ While recording
- A VU meter shows audio levels β if only one channel is active, check the RCA cables on the mixer.
- The booking timer counts down to the end of your session.
- Tabs are locked during active recording.
- Waveform appears in audio mode.
- Zooming is supported in video mode.
- You cannot change recording mode mid-session.
πΎ Storage + battery warnings
- Minimum 8GB storage required β 1 hour β 3.6GB, so double that is advised.
- If storage is low, a warning shows before recording starts. Free up space by offloading unused apps, deleting old podcasts, or using Apple's Storage Optimization tips.
- If battery drops below 20%, a warning is displayed.
- If the phone dies during a recording, the recording is lost.
- We strongly recommend plugging in your phone during long sessions.
π₯ Saving + sharing recordings
- Recordings are not stored in the cloud β they download directly to your phone after recording.
- The app must stay open until the download completes (this can be done off-site).
- Head to the Library section to manage downloads. The Processing area shows download status; tapping a recording there shows its info and, at times, download controls.
Once downloaded:
- Audio is processed and synced with video if needed.
- View saved recordings in the Saved tab within the Library section.
- Tap to play; swipe down to close the player.
- Share via the iOS share sheet.
- Save to Photos if you need it for editing or social sharing.
