Connecting your phone or laptop to play through the speakers
Requirement: To connect your phone or laptop to the mixer, you will need to bring an RCA-3.5mm jack cable (Aux cable) to your session, just like the one shown below. Also, if you're an iPhone user you will also need a Lightning to 3.5mm adaptor to connect the Aux cable to.
For rooms that come with an Allen & Heath Zed-6FX mixer only, you will need a 2 large jack to small 3.5 jack cable; more on this at the bottom of this page.
Please note:
- Whilst we try to provide these AUX cables where possible, we cannot guarantee the availability of one on the day and cannot provide spares - if this cable is needed for your session make sure to bring one with you!
- Bluetooth connection to the mixer or speakers is not possible - the only way to connect a phone is via the AUX cable method
If the mixer is an Alto Live 1202:
-
Make sure the mixer is switched on, and the blue power light is lit up. Check that its power cable is properly plugged in.
-
Make sure the speakers are on and showing the power light. Check that their power cable is properly plugged in and they’re switched on at the wall sockets.
-
Using the RCA-3.5mm jack cable (Aux cable) shown above, plug your device into the ‘2Track IN’ port at the back of the mixer.
-
On your laptop’s audio settings, make sure the Output device is set to ‘Built-In output’ or ‘External audio/Headphones’.
-
On the mixer, below the FX section, look for the ‘2Track IN’ blue knob. Make sure the button next to it is unpressed (set to ‘Main Out’) and the blue knob is turned up to a reasonable level. You can check this while playing some audio from your device.
-
Turn up the MAIN slider on the mixer. It will be the last slider on the right. Check this is set to a reasonable level (about 3⁄4 of the way up).
-
Your device is now ready to play through the speakers.
Common fixes if it's not working still:
- Make sure the RCA (red and white/black) cables are connected into the '2 Track IN' inputs rather than the '2 track OUT' - if connected to the 'OUT' you will get very quiet playback
- Double check that '2 Track In' button is set to the MAIN OUT position (not pressed in)
If the mixer is a Proel MQ12USB:
-
Repeat steps 1 and 2 above.
-
Using the Aux cable shown above, plug your device into Channel 9/10 or 11/12 red and white sockets. If you're on 11/12 make sure the grey button is unpressed (set to 'Line').
-
On your laptop’s audio settings, make sure the Output device is set to ‘Built-In output’ or ‘External audio/Headphones’.
-
Turn up the grey Volume slider at the bottom of the channel, while playing some audio from your device.
-
Turn up the Main Mix slider on the mixer, the last one on the right.
-
Your device is ready to play through the speakers.
If the mixer is an Allen & Heath ZED-6FX :
-
Repeat steps 1 and 2 above.
- Prepare your 2TS to 3.5mm cable, also called double large jack to small jack aux cable (shown below). Remember, we do not provide extra cables, you will need to bring this cable from home!
-
Connect the small jack end into your device and the 2 large jacks into ports L and R of channel 4 on the mixer. Then turn up the volume knob at the bottom, making sure the headphones button is unpressed. If you turn up the MAIN MIX fader, you should now have music playing out!
