A Quick Guide to Setting Up Your Podcast Room

Recording, effects, and connecting your devices

Before you arrive at the studio, a few things will help your session go smoother. Our studios connect to the mics using a RØDECaster Pro interface, which you'll use to control volumes, trigger sounds, and record.
You have two recording options:
A. Record with your laptop
B. Record directly onto your microSD.

💻 A. Recording with your laptop

To record this way, bring with you:

  • Your laptop.
  • Recording software (DAW) installed — we like Ableton, Logic Pro X, and GarageBand, but it's up to your knowledge and preference.
  • A USB-C cable — the RØDECaster has a USB-C port, so bring a cable that suits your laptop's port too.

Windows users — important: you'll need to download and install ASIO4All for the interface to work correctly with your DAW. Once downloaded:

  1. Go to the Windows Start Menu and open ASIO4ALL Offline Settings.
  2. Select your interface by clicking the button next to it — it'll light up blue when selected.
  3. Open your DAW's input/playback settings menu and select ASIO4ALL as the input/playback device.

💾 B. Recording directly onto your microSD card

Important: Always save your recording and eject the microSD card successfully before your session ends. If the power in your room goes out, recordings will likely be lost, and we can't recover them or compensate for any damage or loss. Hit REC on time so the RØDECaster can save the recording without issues.

You can also record directly from the RØDECaster onto a microSD card, and import the audio into a DAW for editing later. Bring a microSD card to your session — they're not supplied. Recommended brands here.

To record onto your microSD card:

  • Towards the left of the back of the device, there's a slot to fit your microSD card.
  • Push the microSD card (logo facing up) into the slot until it clicks into place.
  • A microSD symbol appears on the touchscreen once your card is recognised.
  • Use the hardware menu to check the card's capacity, or erase/format it if needed — this erases all data on the card, so proceed with caution.
  • Push the microSD card to eject it — don't pull it out, as this can damage both the card and the RØDECaster's port.

Recording on an SD card in multi-track mode saves the session as a single PolyWAV file. Don't worry — just open it with a DAW that accepts it (e.g. Reaper, which is free), and it'll automatically split into 14 separate tracks — the first 2 being the full stereo mix, and the rest individual tracks. More on how this works.

🎚️ Advanced FX and processing

To enhance your voice and podcast as you record, use the onboard effects the RØDECaster provides. Check out this section from RØDE's official page, which covers all the main tutorials on the topic.

📱 Playing audio from your laptop, mobile, or tablet

There are two ways to connect your device — useful for taking calls (Google Meet, Skype, etc.) or playing music through the RØDECaster interface.

1. Using a cable

Use your own AUX cable to connect your device to the AUX input at the back of the interface.

  • Turn the media volume up on your device before adjusting the volume fader under the mobile icon.
  • Adjust the volume on the RØDECaster to your desired level (the "Mobile" icon channel).

2. Using Bluetooth

No AUX cable? Use the Bluetooth feature instead.

  • Hold down the Bluetooth button underneath the REC button for three seconds, then release.
  • Select Yes and wait for the screen on the right to appear.
  • Go to your device's Bluetooth settings and select the RØDECaster Pro to pair.
  • Confirmation of connection will appear on the touchscreen.
