Recording: What do I need to bring?

Before heading down to one of our recording rooms, make sure to check out this list, so you will be sure that you have everything you need before starting to record. As always, please check book.pirate.com for the full list of equipment available for your session in the room you have booked - you will need to bring any extras outside of that list.

What you need to bring:

  • Your own Laptop with the appropriate control software installed and ready to go (see below)
  • A recording software (DAW) that you are confident with. We recommend Logic Pro X or Ableton
  • Basic knowledge of how to self-record — Pirate Studios is fully self-service, so we don't provide engineers on-site

IMPORTANT: Before your session, make sure to have the correct control software downloaded and installed on your laptop.

-For Recording Pro rooms, which use the Focusrite Interface, download Focusrite Control. This application lets you reset a Clarett 4 Pre USB in case the audio isn't coming through correctly. Be sure to get the latest version for Mac or Windows HERE.

-For Recording Lite and Standard rooms, which use the Arturia Minifuse Interface, download the Minifuse Control Center HERE

After downloading the appropriate control center, please restart your laptop.

We also recommend bringing these as a backup:

  • A USB A-C or C-C cable to connect your laptop to the interface and a headphone adaptor (small to large jack connector). These are in case our cables go missing and you would like to save time.
  • Additionally, if a hub is required for your session, you will also need to supply this. Remember to never plug the interface into a USB hub, though - always connect it directly into your laptop.

What We Provide:

  • An Audio Interface
  • Headphones (Lite include 1, Standard and Pro include 2)
  • A USB A and USB C cable to connect your laptop to the interface
  • Speakers
  • Microphone
  • Midi Keyboard

We will not be able to provide anything outside of what is mentioned on the equipment listing at book.pirate.com
Please bring any additional equipment with you.

I haven’t recorded anything or used any recording software before, is this room suitable for me?

As there isn’t anyone on-site to teach you how to use your computer and chosen software we highly recommend that you get yourself proficient before using our Recording studios. The studio setup is not complicated, so if you have been using your software (Logic, Ableton, Pro Tools etc.) at home, then you will easily learn how to use our studios.
